Our Story: Meeting Immediate Needs and Building Lasting Hope
Our story began in 2001 with a simple but powerful commitment: to go where people were and help those in need. Our founder and president, Masada Roberson, began serving individuals experiencing homelessness on the streets of Washington, D.C., by providing meals, clothing, toiletries, and encouragement. That early outreach grew to include life-skills workshops in homeless shelters and within transitional housing programs.
In 2012, our grassroots work formally became Deep Launching, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide immediate and sustainable relief to homeless and low-income children, families, women, men, and veterans. From the beginning, our work has been guided by compassion, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves access to food, essential resources, and opportunities to move toward greater stability.
As community needs grew, we expanded our services beyond street outreach. We developed hunger-relief initiatives, basic-needs distribution programs, Community Resource Day events, health-equity activities, and youth education programs. Through our Distribution Center Program and community partnerships, we have provided thousands of household necessities, personal-care products, clothing items, children’s supplies, and other essential goods at no cost to individuals and families experiencing hardship. Our Community Resource Days now reach vulnerable communities throughout Southern Maryland and Prince George’s County.
Food insecurity became an increasingly urgent focus of our mission in 2020. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of jobs and income experienced by many hourly workers, we recognized an immediate need to help families and individuals facing food insecurity. We expanded our hunger-relief efforts and provided food and essential resources to community members experiencing hardship. This work eventually led to the establishment of an Emergency Food Pantry in 2023 within a classroom trailer at a Title I school in Waldorf, Maryland. Those served at this pantry receive 1 week worth of nutritious groceries, no matter the size of the family as well as diapers, hygiene products, and household necessities. Recognizing that the need extended beyond Charles County, we expanded our hunger-relief work by starting an emergency food pantry in Prince George’s County in 2024. This expansion strengthened our ability to serve families closer to where they live and continued our longstanding commitment to “going where they are.”
We continue to grow through school partnerships, community-based pantry services, child-focused food assistance, fresh-food access, homeless outreach, and the distribution of essential goods. Although our programs have expanded, our purpose remains unchanged: to respond when people are facing hunger, homelessness, financial hardship, or an unexpected crisis—and to serve every person with respect and compassion.
